Text Book Publishing Is An Art.
Text book publishing is a business which makes text books commonly available to students. Since the number of students are high, the number of books published is also high. Publishing a text book requires a careful study of the goals of a particular curriculum and to prepare a text book which meets the requirement. To complete this task the pulishing house requires a team of experts who are generally master-teachers with a high level of dedication and commitment.
Text book pubblishing should include necessary steps to involve teachers who understand the syllabus and develop the material in a simple language in which the students can understand and follow easily. The text book shoul try to avoid conflicts and controversies in their text material. If the text book involves any public controversy, then the time and energy spent in sorting out the issue is much more. This is a colossal waste of time for students; they have to wait for the issues to get settled and then get their text books.
One thing which is common in text book publishing is that text books of the same subject that address the same age group of students, are almost the same, all over the world. Almost 90% of the subject material is the same in all locations across the world and a few changes and adaptaions to the local culture is made, where it is required.
Text book publishing should clearly know the goals or results required from a said curriculum which is designed by the educational authorities of a particular location. Then a group of teachers who is headed by an expert are given assignements on certain topics. All their work is combined together and is reviewed by an expert team in the subject. The review comitee would give their feedback on the work and the necesarry corrections are made by the writers. The next step in text book publishing is sending it for typesetting and proof reading. The editorial team will check for any spelling or printing mistakes and edit the text book. The number of copies has to be decided for publishing. The infrastructure should be able to support the volume of printing that is happening. The decision on the nuber of books is more impotant, since it will decide the break-even point for the publisher. The text book publishing company will enter into a contract to restrict the price of his books at a particular value. The price wil depend on the demand of the book in the market and the number of students who are pursuing a course which requires this book as a text book. The marketing team of the pulishing house will popularize their text books among teachers and make them adopt the book as their teaching material, because in most of the cases, the teacher is the deciding authority on a text book. Students follow their reccomendation without any questions since they believe in their teachers.
